Questions and answers

How do people find Avalon RV?

It is difficult for vintage trailer enthusiasts to find skilled and experienced craftsmen that know the complex details of their vintage projects.

We get most of our business through word-of-mouth. We appreciate happy customers who tell other vintage trailer enthusiasts about us.

It is a close circle of people interested in the bygone era of style and quality work.

Most RV shops turn away work on the older trailers because they do not have an instruction manual for repairs. We have been doing this for so long that we love the work and the challenge.

What do you like most about your job?

The variety of working on different projects from various eras of time. I appreciate both modern RV's and vintage trailers. My favorite projects are the vintage Airstream, Spartan, and Canned Ham trailers like the Shastas; other favorites include Vagabonds, and Silverstreak Clippers.

What questions do customers most commonly ask you?

Can you fix this old thing? We can fix just about anything. We find parts that seem impossible to locate, and can also modify or fabricate a part to do the job.
How much is this going to cost? The price is based on the time it will take and the material costs.
When can we start? Generally within a few weeks.
How long will this take? Most projects can be finished within two or three weeks. Larger restorations may take up to  2 or 3 months.

Do you have a favorite story from your work?

Often times customers come to us with a vintage trailer they’ve been tinkering with for years – one they’ve worked on a little, and also paid someone else to work on, yet it never gets finished. One of the best rewards ever is finishing up a long-standing pet project for a thrilled customer!

Where it all started
From the early beginning working on trailers out of my garage in Benicia, I found a new passion with trailers. This grew along with new projects and new customers. Right from the start, when I brought the very first trailer home, many neighbors and passersby would stop, tell me about their old trailer or a relative that had one growing up. It was not long before I needed to move to a shop for more space. Since then business has not stopped growing, and now many years later there are four employees one traveling designer and an incredible creative atmosphere that makes working at Avalon RV a daily adventure. In the future I look forward to expanding to a sales showroom, custom vehicles and a lot of fun along the way.

Camping with our kids and also growing up enjoying my parents RV led me to my new venture. I loved vacationing with my older sister & parents. We would pack up all of our favorite things, our two dachshunds, bicycles, etc.. and load the camper. Then we hit the road for 3 to 5 weeks each year. Often times we just went from the Bay Area to South Lake Tahoe and stayed there for a month straight. Other years we would travel to Southern California, Canada, Florida and all over the states. I love the U.S.A. and I have seen a lot of it. I want our children to have the same experience. I remember the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Disney World in Florida & Disney Land in L.A. I loved Vancouver Canada, Victoria Island and Stanley Park. I recall seeing flying squirrels in Colorado, the Sea Lion Caves in Oregon, huge Salmon on the Truckee, a Wolverine in Canada, Bears in Yosemite, Buffalo in Yellowstone, the bright lights of Vegas, an old rusted car off Reagan Beach in the water at Lake Tahoe,a Tornado in Kansas, and riding the train at Carson City.

My husband and I are looking for a vintage Airstream, but had no clue how to inspect one. Adam Blair of Avalon RV to the rescue! He not only gave me a lot of guidance via e-mail, he came out with his truck full of tools and a generator and a propane tank to inspect the one we were considering from head to toe. He was incredibly thorough and knew EVERYTHING about Airstreams (of all vintages). Best of all, he was patient enough with a novice like myself to explain everything he was doing so I could learn. I can't recommend Adam highly enough. (And I haven't even gotten to how beautifully he restores Airstreams; you have to go to his website and check those out for yourself.)
