How to choose your RV System: How Much Solar Do I Need?
If you’re an RV owner, embracing solar power brings with it a wide range of different benefits, all at the exact same time. In addition to the fact that it significantly helps cut down on emissions, solar is also beneficial in situations where local regulations make it difficult to use a generator, lets you enjoy dry camping (also referred to as boondocking), and more.
Of course, all of this demands the question – how much solar power do you actually need for your recreational vehicle? The answer to that question requires you to keep a few key things in mind.
Solar Power an RV System: Breaking Things Down
According to one recent study, a typical RV needs about 120 watts of energy on average to function. Likewise, a standard solar panel for an RV can generate between 100 and 400 watts of power.
So if you’re installing 400 watt panels, this means that you’ll need roughly three to maintain your current energy demands. If you’re installing 200 watt panels, you’ll want roughly 10. In general, you can get away with any combination that allows you to meet that standard demand of roughly 120 watts of energy under normal circumstances.
